Camp Upton

  1. They are standing in front of what was Byrd's Tavern, now the site of the Wicomico County Courthouse. They were sent to Salisbury to hold the area for the Union. They had tents on the site where the old Daily Times building was, across from the hospital. In fact, they had the first hospital in town, a big tent at the hospital site today. Not only was it for the troops, but was also used by the townspeople. PGH began operations in the Fitzwater St. area some years after the Civil War.
