I was a bus boy,dishwasher,pots & pans washer and janitor there as a teenager back in the mid-1970's. I remember when Ron Zimmerman(Owner),Norman Webster(Owner) & Wesley Brickhous(Kitchen Mgr.) were the top dogs back then.
I loved that place. Went there a lot in the 80's as a kid. My grandparents were regulars and there were so many social and family functions there. I remember the Alpine Room like it was yesterday. The water feature in the lobby as you walked in. Great memories.
Was very classy restaurant and the best in Salisbury and on lower Delmarva and people traveling up and down the Eastern Shore. Too bad its service suffered before it was sold and eventually torn down to make room for a WaWa store, I think. I live in Florida and have not seen the store only once and think it is a Wawa store. It was the choice restaurant to take your friends and always to celebrate your anniversary in the Alpine Room, which I think was added on in the late 50s, although not entirely sure. Ron Zimmerer was last owner and moved to Florida with his wife.
Brings back a lot of memories. I remember it from when it was just the coffee shop when I was a little boy and the Alpine Room was not quite ready. It was an informal meeting place for a lot of the businessmen in town, particularly on Saturday mornings. My family went there a lot when I was growing up. My father knew both Johnny and Sammy and my brother went to school with Sammy's son Bill. Always consistently good food there and great service from people who knew how to do it...Wes, Hans, Regina, and others whose names I can't recall. We often ended up there after Friday night football games. I particularly liked the Jumbo Stuffed Shrimp! I've never been able to find it anywhere else and I've never been able to recreate it! Oh, well; fond memories, at least. Ultimately, the sons-in-law sold the place to some restaurateurs from the beach who did not understand the local clientele at all and just ruined the place. I considered it a minor blow when I heard that they were tearing it down to put up a Wawa's. Salisbury had much better days and Johnny's and Sammy's was a big part of it.
I remember traveling from my home in Virginia Beach to West Chester, PA with my parents twice a year to visit Grandparents. Salisbury was the half way point and we would always stop and eat at Johnny and Sammy's. I fondly remember their vanilla milk shakes.
I lived right down the street on Maryland Ave. I knew when my grandpop would come from Crisfield that he would treat me to a cheeseburger and milkshake. Great memories

ReplyDeleteSpent many an hour in that place. Mom and dad were regulars. Mom was freinds with the lady that owned Salisbury Ofice Supply next door. :)
