Downtown Late 60's

This photo is a part of the Thurston collection. Mr Thurston who owned the photo gallery in one of the other photos did extensive and beautiful work with these photos of Downtown. I got an email from an individual who is working on a book of his works and when I know when you can purchase I will let you know.

  3. This is looking west (not east toward Rt. 13) toward the river with Benjamins on the right next to R.E. Powell's.

  4. Hess always had the most beautiful windows at Christmas. They had a woman who did nothing but decorating the store. Hess Juniors was down the street behind this photo. Rumor had it at the time that John Hess did his best to keep the old mall from opening because he knew it would kill the downtown area.

  5. It's a shame Mr. Hess was right. Downtown is too quiet now. At one point I had lunch every day at Woolworths. Oh the memories.

  6. I would be interested to know when the book is published to purchase. This photo makes me very sad. Those were the good 'ol days! Pam Hess Gibson (pam@gibson41.com)

  7. Yes this is very sad. And dumb Jake Day thinks he is the new Messiah that is going to resurrect downtown and modernize it. He can't do that because it is a registered Historic Downtown. The only way that it can be saved is if we capitalized on it's historic value and not keep giving property away to their friends and good ole boys. Gillis Gilkerson and others has gotten rich off of the City of Salisbury taxpayers.

    1. Well, Well, Well! So much for it being a "registered Historic Downtown." Jake Day and the city council usurped that and gave a $3 Million Dollar parking lot away to a Friend Of Jakes(FOJ) for $10,000. Approximately 3 acres of land on the corner of Rt. 13 and Rt. 50. He gave a 20 year tax abatement for the Ross Building and that is the biggest eyesore Salisbury. Thirteen stories. You can thank Jake Day, Jack Heath, Muir Boda, Michele Gregory, Angela Blake and April Jackson. Oh yeah, and Muir Boda got a gravy job as a department head in the city. How unethical is that to get elected so that you can get a good paying $100,000+ a year job. Much better than Muirs $35,000 a year job at Walmart picking up home delivery for the lazy people. Now Randy Taylor is the new Mare and he has been in office for over a month now and he's shown everyone that he is one of the Liberals.
